Working with such a diverse range of wildlife has broadened my RVT skills and deepened my love for veterinary medicine.
Volunteering with IVVO (Australia 2024) has been an extraordinary experience. Founded and operated by the dedicated Dr. Audrey Shen from Sydney, and Dr. Scott Bainbridge from Ontario, Canada, this organization provides and unparalleled opportunity to work with a variety of communities; from rewarding Spay/Neuter campaigns in Ecuador, to work with wildlife and exotic species in a truly hands-on environment! In Possumwood Wildlife Sanctuary, established by the inspiring Prof. Steve Garlick and Dr. Rosemary Austin are a beacon of hope for severely injured and traumatized native animals.
The self-funded facility not only focuses on the recovery of these animals, but also engages in crucial research to better understand their behaviour. The dedication of the voluntary staff, including veterinary nurses, assistants and visiting veterinarians, who work tirelessly to care for 400-500 wild animals each year, is nothing short of heroic! The fully equipped veterinary hospital at Possomwood is a testament to the power of private donations and community support. Being a part of this year's team has allowed me to witness the incredible power of collective efforts. Working with such a diverse range of wildlife has broadened my RVT skills and deepened my love for veterinary medicine. Every day here has brought new challenges and many rewards, making this an invaluable experience. So, what are you waiting for?
