Possumwood Wildlife Sanctuary
Opportunity to spend 5 days working with some of Australia's most unique wildlife. Follow Dr Audrey Shen, Dr Scott Bainbridge, Dr Rosemary Austen and Professor Steve Garlick treating kangaroos, wombats, possums, lizards, snakes, echidnas and much more.
Assist with medical procedures and surgeries on some of the most amazing animals and get involved in the rescue and rehabilitation of many injured wildlife. The 5 day program brings you behind the scenes in a kangaroo, wombat and dingo sanctuary and rotations through Possumwood Wildlife Hospital- a dedicated wildlife hospital set up during the 2019-2020 Bushfires.
Best Travel plans would be to fly into Sydney on the 5th August morning. Fly out of Canberra on 9th August afternoon, or alternatively come back to Sydney for any add on trip plans.
A day visit is included to Hills Wildlife Sanctuary in Dural to learn all about our native birds, emus, gliders, possums, flying foxes., bettongs, parma wallabies, pademelons and reptiles. Spend a day working in our specialised wildlife deployable hospital there with Dr Audrey.
The hospital and sanctuaries are located in and around Bungendore, New South Wales -a small rural town just 30 minutes from Canberra. Volunteers assist in the sanctuary with daily tasks, wildlife rescues, rehabilitation and bottle feeding sessions with baby wombats and joeys. Put your veterinary skills to use at the busy wildlife hospital and learn about the intriguing anatomy of our Australian wildlife up close!
Itinerary
Day 1- Arrivals and Intro session. Check into accommodation. Group dinner.
Day 2- Education day at Hills Wildlife Sanctuary and Hospital work
Tour the sanctuary with our experience team. Learn all about our different native wildlife animals and assist with daily tasks and feedings. Afternoon Wildlife Hospital consultations and surgeries.
Day 3- Possumwood Wildlife Hospital
Wildlife Hospital Rotation, Anatomy Class and Sanctuary Tasks/Bottle Feedings. Rescues. Sunset wombat walks.
Day 4- Possumwood Wildlife Hospital
Wildlife Hospital Rotation and Sanctuary Tasks/Bottle Feedings. Rescues. Sunset wombat walks.
Day 5- Sydney Fox and Dingo Sanctuary and Departure from Canberra
Visit the nearby Fox and Dingo sanctuary. Learn all about Dingoes and help take their sanctuary dingoes for their daily bush walks.
*Limited places of 8 *AUD $3,200 (PRICE IN AUSTRALIAN DOLLARS) Fee includes a sizeable donation to Possumwood Wildlife Sanctuary, program as above, accommodation for 4 nights, daily breakfasts and transfers. Flights not included.
